Metamorphism of the Canadian Shield, Ontario, Canada. I. the Superior Province

چکیده
This paper is an outgrowth of the compilation of metamorphic information for the Canadian Shield in Ontario, and complements the recently compiled Metamorphic Map of the Canadian Shield. The paper contains a summary of the Archean metamorphic history of the Superior Province in Ontario on a subprovince basis, with an emphasis on the limitations of the existing data and the reasoning applied in extrapolating metamorphic boundaries. Little of the early metamorphic history of the Superior Province (pre-2715 Ma) is preserved, but there is local evidence for events at 2870–2850, 2810, and 2730 Ma within some of the older blocks of crust. The present distribution of metamorphic grade and age of metamorphism largely reflects pan-Superior events in the interval 2710–2640 Ma that occurred subsequent to coalescence of a system of island arcs, back-arcs, oceanic plateaus and microcontinents between 2720 and 2690 Ma. The distribution of metamorphic events and facies is the result of three interrelated patterns. 1) There is a relationship between subprovince type, metamorphic grade and age, with granite–greenstone subprovinces generally preserving older greenschistto lower-amphibolite-facies events, metasedimentary subprovinces preserving younger middle-amphiboliteto granulite-facies events, and high-grade gneiss subprovinces preserving the youngest events. 2) Discrete metamorphic episodes between 2720 and 2640 Ma are associated with periods of major plutonism. 3) There is a pattern of increasing complexity of metamorphic history with increasing metamorphic grade. The present distribution of metamorphic facies in the Superior Province also was influenced by uplift, tilting, and erosion during the Paleoproterozoic. The timing of lode-gold and rare-element-pegmatite mineralization within the Superior Province corresponds closely with metamorphic evolution; it is consistent with models whereby gold-bearing fluids and pegmatite-forming melts develop, in part, as a result of granulite-facies metamorphism of the lower crust.

Metamorphism of the Canadian Shield, Ontario, Canada. Ii. Proterozoic Metamorphic History
This paper is a complement to the Tectonometamorphic Map of the Canadian Shield, and contains a brief description of the metamorphic history of Proterozoic orogenic belts and rock sequences in the Canadian Shield in Ontario, with a focus on rocks of the Southern and Grenville provinces. Metamorphism in the Southern Province has generally been attributed to the Penokean orogeny (~1879–1820 Ma), ...
متن کاملPolicy Capacity for Health Reform: Necessary but Insufficient; Comment on “Health Reform Requires Policy Capacity”
Forest and colleagues have persuasively made the case that policy capacity is a fundamental prerequisite to health reform. They offer a comprehensive life-cycle definition of policy capacity and stress that it involves much more than problem identification and option development. I would like to offer a Canadian perspective. If we define health reform as re-orienting the health system from acut...
متن کاملBreaking Gridlock in Health Policy?; Comment on “A New Synthesis”
Pierre-Gerlier Forest has put forward the case that we are on the brink of a revolution in health policy that will be the result of the interplay of five factors. I would not challenge any of them but would emphasize the need to address socio-economic health inequalities, which have the potential to become a major cost driver in a time of growing economic inequality. To Dr. Forest’s list, I wou...

Abstract:Despite Iran’s critical relations with USA since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Canada had often played the role of an honest broker and maintained relations with Iran, con-trary to the US. Although the Canadian Government has not viewed the Iranian regime as democratic actor, it was interested in pursuing diplomacy for moderating the Iranian Policies too. Iran and Canada relati...
متن کاملWhere did the doctors go? A study of retention and migration of provisionally licensed international medical graduates practising in Newfoundland and Labrador between 1995 and 2006.
INTRODUCTION More than any other Canadian province, Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) relies on provisionally licensed international medical graduates (PLIMGs) to provide primary health care, particularly in rural communities. However, turnover among PLIMGs is high, and this is expensive and disruptive to the populations they serve. METHODS We developed and analyzed a database that allowed us to...
